Union County High
School is located in Lake Butler, Florida approximately 40 miles north east of Gainesville. Union
County is the smallest county in the state of Florida with a population of approximately 12,300 people in a 246 square mile
area.
Union County plays host to three public schools including Lake Butler Elementary School, Lake
Butler Middle school, and Union County High School. All three schools are located next to each other, are
purple and gold, and adopt the tiger mascot. The “Spirit of Union County Tiger Marching Band”
currently consists of 109 members. This band includes the 8th graders from the middle school
during marching season only. Union County High School averages 625 students in grades 9-12. The Union
County Band is in the “CC” classification according to the Florida Bandmaster’s Association.
They have received superior ratings at FBA events for 25 consecutive years. Band Director - Kelly DorseyMs.
Kelly Dorsey has been the Band Director at Union County High School since 2003. She spent thirteen years
before that at Bell Middle and High School. She received her Bachelor of Music Education degree from The
Florida State University in 1989. Bands under Ms. Dorsey’s direction have consistently received superior
ratings at FBA Sponsored events. Ms. Dorsey has served as a guest clinician for the North Florida Honor
Band (Baker,Bradford, Columbia, and Union Counties), Levy All-County Band, Alachua All-County Band, Four Counties Honor Band
(Indian River, Okechobee, St. Lucie, and Martin Counties), the Osceola All-County Band, Duvall All-County Band, Seminole
All-County Band, Volusia All-County, Flagler All-County and the Florida All-State Small Schools Honor Band. Ms.
Dorsey has also served as an adjudicator in Florida and Georgia. In addition, she has served The Florida
Bandmaster’s Association as member of the Marching Band Study Committee, Mentoring Committee, and currently serves as
a member of the State Music Selection Committee and Professional Resources Committee. Ms. Dorsey presented
a lecture at the FMEA State Convention on “Building a successful small school band program”. She
was also selected as “Teacher of the Year” at Bell High School in 1997-98. In addition, she
was listed in “Who’s, Who Among America’s Teachers in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2004, and 2005. Ms.
Dorsey is a member of the Florida Bandmaster’s Association, National Bandmaster’s Association, Percussive Arts
Society, Tau Beta Sigma-National Band Fraternity for Women, and an elected member of the American School Band Director's
Association.
